Lighting Design

Medea was a site specific work produced by Agora Teatro at Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, a 16th Century Spanish Fortress. This adaptation of Medea took a very poetic approach to the play. The lighting had to respond to this poetic mode of storytelling while at the same time light a large space that is not equipped as a performance venue.

The location was the lower patio of the fortress. The space is a crossroads between the public and the private much like the play itself.

The majority of the lighting came from non-traditional lighting instruments; industrial floodlights, torches, and so forth. Broad gestures, combined with spotlights, controlled and contained the action of the play.

We kept a tightly controlled color palette in order to allow the shifting modes of storytelling to do their work as effectively as possible. A minimal approach to this dense and complex text effectively served the storytelling.
