Theater places language center stage as a primary aspect of the human experience. Through language and action we are transported into new worlds and new lives. Plays provide a testing ground for new ideas. New possibilities.
With a play, we always begin with the text. The dialog. The words that are spoken. From this beginning we are given insight into the world of the play. Is it a "beautiful sunset" or a "dark and cold night?" What words are spoken will guide our design decisions and lead us deeper into that world.
Just as the poetic language of Shakespeare or Beckett will guide us in one direction, the realism of Mamet or Ibsen will take us somewhere else.
Every production takes shape around these words. Every action moves from this center. From the written language we forge a visual language to understand the emotional landscape.
