Prayer was a solo dance performance set to a rendition of Amazing Grace. The movement in this
piece existed wholly on the verticle plane. The dancer's feet never moved.
Because of the restricted nature of the movement, there was an inherent problem with the performer getting 'lost' on
the stage. Vast streaches of darkness can quickly overwhelm a single person. At the same time the piece was a
very personal dialogue and did not want to be expansively lit.
So, there was a single pool of light that provided a single shadow on the fllor. Then, the dancer was lit with
lowsidelights that slowly increased in intensity during the course of the entire piece. The effect was to feel like
a stained glass window come to life in prayer.
As the music cresendos and the prayer reaches completion, the lighting is brilliantly strong. Yet because it was
built up so slowly it feels like the same picture, yet at the same time transformed.
