Force/Quit - Choreography by Nicolo Fonte

Return to Dance Lighting

Force/Quit was choreographed by Nicolo Fonte to Arvo Part's Fur Alina.  The choreography held much the same methodical space as the music.  Slow and severe.  Like the music, the dance took its time to develop.

The dancers moved slowly through time and space, giving the audience the illusion that we knew where we were going.  Suddenly, you would find moments on stage where you had arrived in a wholly different location, and though you knew you had arrived there consciously, you could not clearly retrace your steps.

This piece looks back at a time lost to memory without the illusion of sentimentality.  It is love without the romantic.  Yet it is strong without being harsh.

For the performance we tied back the masking to expose the lighting booms.  At times the light almost over-exposed the dancers.  Yet it would receed into the air as quickly as it struck.
