Color Codes: A Point of Hue was produced by the Residue Dance Theater at Joyce SoHo in 2007. A full evening modern dance piece for five dancers, Color Codes was composed of six sections each with its own color palette of costumes and props.

Color was a prominent storytelling device in the piece. The obvious answer would be saturated light for each section; reds for the Red section and so forth. That route lacked a strong connection to the deeper themes in the piece. I opted for a palette of cool white light. The dramaturgical needs would be met through form and timing.

The light was shaped as boxes of various dimensions which would reconfigure and recombine through the evening. We were able to achieve rather striking effects with very simple gestures, backlight and a footlight, or perhaps a single shinbuster, would tell us volumes.
