It just gets better

I saw the most spectacular dance/performance piece ever last night. From the people who did De la Guarda.

One in The Dance

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

A few of us were late to see a play here in Edinburgh and were walking down the street when we heard some drummers, so we followed the sound and popped into this random old courtyard to take a look.

It was a Chinese percussion group.

They were amazing. “The Spirit of the Beat” they called themselves and man oh man did they feel the spirit.

They got the whole crowd hooting and hollering after them in a kind of call and response situation and then took to the streets leading this band of dancing fools. We gathered more and more people as we wandered the streets dancing and shouting and laughing.

After about fifteen minutes or so we pass by a group of kids who, it turns out, were the UK breakdancing champions and they started dancing with the drummers and we all continued on down the street.

It was like living inside a big musical theatre dance number. It was awesome. It was pure dancing magic.

Wind Mills for Living

A series of rotating buildings based on Dynamic Architecture will be built around the world, starting in Dubai, U.A.E. The Dynamic Architecture concept was introduced by Florentine architect David Fisher.

The rotating buildings get their electrical power from wind turbines that are placed between floors and which rotate freely with the wind. Additional power is provided from solar cells on the tops of the individual floors.

Each individual floor is able to rotate slowly, based on commands issued by the owners of condos or apartments on that floor. I assume that the building owners can also take control, for coordinated movements of the floors. Note that the rotation of the floors is slow and uses power – the rotation of the floors does not produce power.

The building is constructed around a central core; each floor is composed of individual pie-like sections that are pre-built and hoisted up the central core (see illustration). The builder claims that rotating buildings can be constructed by just ninety people on the construction site; compare this to the typical skyscraper construction site, which may have up to 2,000 workers at a time.

Solid Light

Researchers from the Universities of Melbourne and Cambridge have unveiled a new theory that shows light can behave like a solid.

“Solid light will help us build the technology of this century,” says Dr Andrew Greentree of the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Greentree and colleagues Jared Cole and Professor Lloyd Hollenberg of the University of Melbourne with Dr Charles Tahan of the University of Cambridge made their ‘solid light’ breakthrough using tools more commonly used to study matter.

“Solid light photons repel each other as electrons do. This means we can control photons, opening the door to new kinds of faster computers,” says Dr Greentree.
