I saw the most spectacular dance/performance piece ever last night. From the people who did De la Guarda.

One in The Dance

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

A few of us were late to see a play here in Edinburgh and were walking down the street when we heard some drummers, so we followed the sound and popped into this random old courtyard to take a look.

It was a Chinese percussion group.

They were amazing. “The Spirit of the Beat” they called themselves and man oh man did they feel the spirit.

They got the whole crowd hooting and hollering after them in a kind of call and response situation and then took to the streets leading this band of dancing fools. We gathered more and more people as we wandered the streets dancing and shouting and laughing.

After about fifteen minutes or so we pass by a group of kids who, it turns out, were the UK breakdancing champions and they started dancing with the drummers and we all continued on down the street.

It was like living inside a big musical theatre dance number. It was awesome. It was pure dancing magic.
