Lighting Design

Sake with the Haiku Geisha played Off-Broadway at the Perry Street Theatre in New York City, and was produced by Gotham Stages.

The scenery was simple and elegant. A patterned wood floor contained within a box of light pink silk.

Lighting this space was an exciting challenge. The silks provided a wonderful surface that billowed softly and took light in an amazingly dynamic way.

During a particularly dramatic moment, the fabrics were released to flutter to the ground. This exposed the raw theater space and caused a change in the lighting and style of visual storytelling. We transitioned from top light to low side lighting, from rich lush colors and textures to raw clear light. A space that was so clean, orderly, and controlled became literally flooded with light as the space exploded into new modes of dramatic action.
